maxwell's one-year milestone

can you guess what day it is today, max?

it's a day you get balloons, your very own cupcake, and even special glasses...can you guess?  that's right!  it's your birthday!

june 1, 2013:
weight: 21 lbs 5 oz (50 %ile)
height: 29 3/4" (44 %ile)
has two bottom teeth and two adorable dimples
sleeps from 7/730pm-6/630am
eats 6 small meals a day

max's first year definitely went faster than pace's first year.  his personality has grown just as fast as he has--max is a sweet, tender boy with lots of comic relief and he also manages to still have that little banshee streak if you get on his bad side!

i finally learned my lesson after making two cakes for pace--i'll just stick to cupcakes.  i guess my tradition is making carrot cake for the first birthday.  i don't really give sweets to our babies before they turn one, so a carrot cake still lets me feel like i'm getting some veggies in there.  ha ha.  i remember pace crying with his candles on his first birthday--he just wasn't sure what to do, and didn't like when they blew out and they just left smoke behind.  i don't know, maybe it wasn't his personal birthday...but with someone's birthday candles he wasn't too happy...max, on the other hand, was very curious about the candle and wanted to hold it!  i pushed his hand away as fast as i could, and then we just ended up holding the cupcake in front of him and pace helped blow out the candles.  i found the birthday glasses at the party store and thought it would be a fun tradition to start--wear birthday glasses while singing happy birthday!

max loves: being tickled--he is ticklish i think on every square inch of his body, even the palms of his hands; his soft blankets and binkies at nap time and bed time; a good forehead nuzzle--he'll crawl right over and lean his head into your leg, arm, or forehead, give a little happy coo and nuzzle away; music--he'll shake his little bottom to dance the minute he hears a song, and he especially loves playing the piano; doing the motions to itsy-bitsy spider and i'm a little teapot; seeing daddy when he gets home from work; crawling up stairs or monkey climbing the banister; going for a walk--with assistance holding on to something or someone

max definitely does not like: being splashed with water (unless it's in the tub); being put down if he wants to be held; being separated from mama if i'm in sight; missing his morning nap on sunday; pace taking his toys away from him

max eats everything at this point.  i don't think i've tried peanut butter with him yet, but he eats whatever we're eating for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, and all snacks in between.  i still mash things up that need mashing up for him, as he only has the two bottom teeth, but he's pretty good with everything else.  we do everything from salmon to cheeseburger, eggplant parmesan to lentils, all veggies and fruits.  he's getting the hang of putting food from his try to his mouth, and loves spearing food with his fork--he gives a satisfied grin and giggle when he pokes something and then quickly bites it off his fork. i don't think he has a favorite food yet, although he gobbled down salmon pretty fast the one time i made it since he could have it.

neither of the boys were big on smashing the cake and wearing it.  max sort of poked at it, but was definitely more interested in wielding his fork, trying to get some good jabs at that icing stuff.

max is a sweet, sweet boy who loves a good cuddle, but don't cuddle too long--he'll jump from your arms or push you away if cuddle time goes beyond his time limit.  he is a very happy little boy--waking up with a grin on his face, and when you go into his room, he immediately starts pointing at things and jabbering.  he is definitely more curious and adventurous than pace--the vacuum, blender, and most other noises don't bother him at all.  he also doesn't mind going to see dr. mumford, and in fact giggled during his one-year check up when dr. mumford palpated his tummy.  max is very social and extremely talkative--he points and jabbers at everything.  no words yet, but he does recognize a few things if i ask him where they are (balloon, nose, bird, pace, daddy, mama).  max seems to be very headstrong, stubborn, and determined--if he gets something in his mind, he's doing it, come hell or high water.  he loves to not just climb up the stairs, but loves playing with the banister, climbing just like a little monkey.  if we are going up or down stairs, he will practically throw himself out of the arms of whoever is carrying him and lunge for the banister to do his monkey climb.  he is very strong, so we really have to be careful!

the coolest presents from uncle jon erik--max loves his little walker and playhouse!  (as does pace--pace has become the little usurper when it comes to presents and toys)
