Blue Gesso Art Lab

Art Lessons kept us busy June and July.  I had two classes in June and one class in July, and they went great.  We studied an artist and their movement/techniques, and then tried our hand at our own age-appropriate project.  One example:  Abstract art, Jackson Pollock, translated into marble and string art projects.  The boys were really interested in participating in June, with Pace even asking, "Mommy, can we do art again?  Just me and you in the art room?"  That about melted my heart and brought back so many great memories of doing art with my own mom when I was little.  In July, the boys figured they'd already had the lessons and chose to stay upstairs and watch and show while eating lunch.  Although the boys are always up for art chores, most notably sharpening the pencils.  I guess they'd never seen a sharpener before, and they were fascinated!  They ran all over the house, gathering all the pencils they could find and spent an hour taking turns sharpening everything, then asking me if they could sharpen everything again.  I had to explain the fine line between sharpening pencils and sharpening too much so there's no more pencil left!

This was Fauvist Day, where we talked about Art as a method for Expressing Feelings, and how Fauvists used color to express emotion.  We spent some time talking about the colors on the color wheel, and some time making silly/mad/happy/scared/etc. faces in the mirrors, and then using crazy colors to paint Fauvist self-portraits.

This was after Art is Action and Expression Abstract Day, the boys wanted to spend some extra time in the art room experimenting.
