fieldtrip: the hogle zoo

if there's one thing these theme days are good for, it's definitely getting me out of my shell.  i'm perfectly content to do my things around the house, do little things with the boys, make bread, run errands, go for runs, etc.  i don't feel like i'm a very adventurous mama, and i try to avoid i-15 at all costs if i can--i'm kind of a ninny on that road.  but here we were, fieldtrip day.  and i decided to take the boys to the zoo.  the day before my friend called to say she had the day off work and wanted to know if we were doing anything.  she ended up coming to the zoo with us!  it definitely made me feel a little bit braver!

so i packed the snacks, drinks, diapers, and we hit the road.  45 minutes later we exited the freeway and pace started to cry.  10 seconds later all his breakfast came up...the poor thing had gotten carsick!  out of all the things i thought to pack, new clothes was not on the list...amazingly enough, just as we pulled off the freeway, walmart was right there!  we pulled up to the garden center and the workers were kind enough to let us hose down the carseat, and then we got new clothes and a towel for pace to sit on, as his seat was a little wet...

the first thing we saw at the zoo was a construction site...and pace was in heaven.  give that kid a truck, and he's content.  he probably could have stayed in front of that window the whole time, but we moved everyone along to find some animals.  max had fallen asleep between walmart and the drive to the zoo, and napped for a little bit in the stroller.  he woke up in time for a picture with the elephant!

right in the middle of the zoo was a big water splashpad area for the kids--couldn't have been a better thing to have on a hot day!  pace was slightly more interested in playing in the water than trying to find and visit the animals!

and then we found the carousel!  pace gets carsick after 45 minutes of driving on a straight, fast-paced freeway, but he's totally fine going "round and round" on the carousel...

the other bit of the adventure:  i got a ticket.  we got to the zoo and hour later than planned due to our walmart pitstop, so the parking lot was full.  we parked on the street across from the zoo.  we got there around 11, and it took probably 15 minutes or so to get everyone out and the stroller loaded up, and then waiting to cross the street.  the time on the ticket was 11:24am, so the cop was just waiting...the ticket said the stickers on my license plate were out of date.  i knew that wasn't true--i'd just gone the previous week for the safety and emissions to get new stickers.  so i went to the back to check it out, and here's what i saw:

i had accidentally put the year sticker over top of the month sticker...typical mama brain, right?  and instead of the cop catching me and saying, oh, by the way, change your sticker over...he decided to fine me.  i called the number provided and explained the situation...the best they could do was reduce the fine from $30 to $10 for improper sticker display.  oh well.  you take what you can get, right?

the boys fell asleep for about 20 minutes on the car ride home (so we didn't need the second outfit i had gotten for pace just in case we needed it on the way home...), and i was excited to get them home and in bed so i could have some time to decompress...but when we got home they woke up and decided they'd had enough of a nap!  we all had a good night's rest that night!
